On account of its outstanding processing and application characteristics, the Bayflex MP polyurethane system from Bayer MaterialScience AG is an excellent choice for the encapsulation of windows in automotive applications. The material surrounds the edge of the window in the form of an adherent elastic coating so that the window can be installed in the vehicle body without complications. Bayflex MP is characterized by a wide processing window. Because the polyurethane mixture has a low viscosity during the injection process, long flow paths can be filled at relatively low temperatures and at low pressure, enabling very large windows to be encapsulated with only a single gating point. Reaction Injection Molding technology also makes it possible to insert-mold metal parts directly in the mold. The excellent adherence of Bayflex MP to the glass and metal surfaces guarantees that the composite will withstand high mechanical loads. Because the polyurethane system is relatively soft, it can also be used without problems for windows with a curved geometry. The gasketing also has very low water absorption and meets the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Standard fire safety test. Bayflex MP is used, for example, in the series production of the glass roof for the new Audi Q7. This is divided into three sections: a sun roof in the forward area, a fixed glass roof in the middle area and a pop-up roof in the rear. These components are produced by Arvin Meritor in its Lozorno Plant in Slovakia by processing a newly developed, aromatic, UV-protected polyurethane system comprising Bayflex TP.PU 46IF06 and Desmodur TP.PU 48IF21. “With Bayflex MP, Bayer MaterialScience is expanding its activities in the field of window encapsulation. We are encountering lively interest in the market,” says Dr. Hans-Detlef Arntz, a polyurethanes expert from Bayer MaterialScience. To provide additional support for the user, Bayer MaterialScience has developed a software-based 3D simulation of the flow behavior of Bayflex MP. This tool can be used to rheologically optimize the flows right from the development phase, and can prevent entrapped air and other problems during manufacture.
