Carpets are comfortable to walk on, dampen footfall noise and offer good slip resistance, quite unlike hard types of flooring like terrazzo, tiles and parquet. Conventional carpets have their disadvantages, however. They are often laid fully-bonded to the floor surface, which inevitably leads to problems when it comes to their removal, a laborious, dusty and noisy job involving a carpet stripper, which all too often leaves traces of adhesive sticking to the floor. An infinitely more agreeable alternative is now available in the form of Compur Comfort floor covering from the Dura-Malans AG carpet company in Malans, Switzerland. This carpeting features an integral polyurethane backing based on Desmodur and Desmophen raw materials from Bayer MaterialScience AG. “Compur Comfort floor coverings can be laid easily and inexpensively, and are equally easy to remove, with no dust or residues”, says Werner Steck, managing Director of Dura-Malans. “This marks a new era in textile floor coverings, and sets completely new standards in terms of cleaning, hygiene, renovation and removal.” The new system comes in various qualities and is produced in a continuous coating process in widths of up to 4.60 meters. “The polyurethane coating is odorless, impermeable to water and retains a high level of elasticity throughout the service life of the floor covering”, says Winfried Trabandt, a polyurethane expert at Bayer MaterialScience. “Its good heat resistance also makes it suitable for laying on surfaces with underfloor heating.” In addition to apartments and large real estate developments, the floor covering is also used in nursing homes and residential homes for the elderly, where it affords a safe footing and helps to prevent accidents. The dust-binding properties of the pile make this floor covering suitable for allergy sufferers too, and its softness and coziness create a more pleasant, warmer atmosphere in the room. This is ultimately reflected in the annual heating bill, because the temperature in a room carpeted with Compur Comfort can be kept a degree or two lower than a room with a smooth floor, an important contribution to energy and cost savings.
