THE POLYURETHANE COATING SYSTEM WAS APPLIED TO 800 SQUARE METERS OF FLOOR SPACE
08 November 2005 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

KoelnMesse is currently constructing four new exhibition halls and a conference center in the northern sector of the Cologne trade fair grounds. The new buildings are being built to replace the historic Rhineside Halls, which are supposed to be taken over by the television station RTL.

In the conference area, a modern press center that will host journalists from all over the world is also being built. The roughly 800 square meters of floor space in the new press center have now been completely covered with a decorative Artwalk brand polyurethane floor coating from Bayer MaterialScience AG. That makes it the largest surface coated with this system in a single procedure until now. The coating was formulated and applied by the Dutch floor and plastics specialist Bolidt of Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, the Netherlands, one of six companies with which Bayer MaterialScience has entered into cooperative agreements for the formulation, design and application of Artwalk. The finished press center floor is scheduled to be handed over to KoelnMesse in December 2005.

“The Artwalk brand stands for a high degree of individuality and opens up nearly unlimited design freedom,” said Werner Ebert, responsible for floor coatings at Bayer MaterialScience. According to Ebert, “The combination of attractive design and ultimate functionality makes the system the perfect floor coating for hotels, restaurants, bistros, shopping centers, discotheques, fitness studios, concert halls or corporate reception areas.”

The Artwalk brand custom floor coatings are based on two-component polyurethane systems formulated with raw materials from the Bayhydrol and Bayhydur or the Desmodur and Desmophen product lines from the Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants Business Unit of Bayer MaterialScience AG. The Bolidt employees began application of the floor coating in the press center by laying down a solid-colored primer; after that they applied the liquid casting resin. Finally, they sealed the walkable art with a transparent, highly abrasion-resistant polyurethane coating capable of standing up to the footsteps of innumerable journalists for years to come.

Employees of the Dutch company Bolidt apply the decorative polyurethane floor coating.

Desmodur or Bayhydur aliphatic isocyanates ensure that the coatings do not fade or yellow. They are also resistant to cleaning agents and chemicals. Burn marks or heavy scratching as a result of vandalism can be easily repaired by grinding down the surface and applying a fresh coat of transparent polyurethane coating formulated using waterborne binders from the Bayhydrol or Bayhydur product lines, for example. The monolithic floors contain no joints or seams. Depending on the ambient temperature and humidity, the floors can be walked on after as little as 24 hours.

In addition to Bolidt, Bayer MaterialScience has also entered into co-branding agreements with Api S.p.A. (Italy), Boulenger (France), Hermeta Chemie and AB Polymerchemie (both in Germany) and Flowcrete Group plc (U.K.), from whom end consumers can procure the decorative floor coatings.
