How will prosperity, technology and justice develop? Many people are curious about how tomorrow’s world could look. For an inventor company like Bayer, however, its existence may depend on its ability to foresee what the future might hold, as it takes many years of research and development before a product reaches the market. The latest edition of research, the Bayer scientific magazine. describes in words and images how Bayer experts, together with partners, are developing various scenarios for life and work in the year 2020. Megacities or closely integrated regions, a sharp contrast between rich and poor, or a broad middle class. The futures scenarios for 2020 which experts in Bayer MaterialScience, together with 13 partners from industry and universities, have developed could hardly be more varied. The futurists are not in the business of fortune-telling, however. They are more concerned with identifying trends as early as possible so that they can set the course for the development of products which will be used tomorrow. This is because it is important for Bayer, as a raw materials supplier for the building industry, to know whether the demand for affordable renovation work or intelligent high-tech building materials will increase in the years to come, or whether, as an automotive supplier, it will have to focus on inexpensive family cars or exclusive, technology-rich vehicles. The nature of our future health care system, the agricultural production of food and the quality of education of specialists and managers are subjects of great importance to the company. This is why, in addition to technological and economic aspects, the Bayer futurists also include political, cultural, demographic and sociopsychological aspects in their scenarios, giving visions of the future which cover all areas of human life.
