BOC SUREFLOW PATIO HEATERS SET TO BRING WARMTH TO UK PUB TRADE
15 September 2006 - BOC Gases

Patio heaters from BOC Sureflow and Calor could be good news for both smokers and non-smokers following the government's announcement of a smoking ban. BOC is supplying a limited range of commercial patio heaters and barbecues to help the licensed trade cope better with the changeable British weather and the possible effects of the forthcoming smoking ban.

Shaun Schofield, BOC Sureflow’s sales and marketing manager, said: "Patio heaters could be a real benefit to non-smokers, by allowing smokers to smoke outside rather than inside the pub or restaurant. This could mean it is easier for outlets to cater for non-smokers with non-smoking areas and protect their staff from the effects of passive smoking by encouraging smokers to smoke in the pub's garden or patio area.

"During the summer months smokers sitting in the pub garden, for instance, is an option, but the onset of colder weather could mean that smokers are no longer keen to remain outside and some fear this could have a knock-on effect on the pubs trading."

Nick Rolf, product manager for the range, said: "Patio heaters could be the answer. If you run a pub or restaurant, patio heaters are a clear demonstration to your customers, smokers and non-smokers, of visible consideration for their needs in advance of any potential ban."

The government announced last November that it will ban smoking in workplaces, cafes, and pubs and bars which serve food in England. A ban, as outlined in the White Paper on Public Health, would be in place in England by 2008. The Scottish Executive has also voted to introduce a ban in enclosed public places which will come into force from Spring 2006.

In recent months, eighteen companies, including Yates, Barracuda and the managed side of Greene King, representing more than 2,500 managed outlets, have agreed to restrict smoking to 20 per cent of their trading space by 2010.

"A recent customer survey by Calor showed that 76 per cent of customers would more readily return to a pub that had patio heaters in the beer garden than one that didn’t. Patio heaters give you an advantage over other pubs because they encourage people to stay for longer even after the sun has gone down, extending your trading space cost effectively", added Shaun.

Patio heaters also allow the licensee to benefit from additional revenue and custom by extending the available drinking and dining area within their outlet.

Other benefits of patio heaters include:
-Increased customer comfort/satisfaction late in the evening

-Patrons will drink and dine for longer

-Benefit from the extra revenue around key seasonal events such as Halloween and Bonfire Night

The relationship between BOC Sureflow and Calor allows BOC customers to order their patio gas and propane cylinders at the same time as their dispense gases which means the UK’s licensed trade can now enjoy a complete 'one stop shop' for all its gas needs.

BOC Sureflow is the UK's leading supplier of dispense gas and also provides a total cellar gas management service for customers requiring gas equipment and safety advice.
