BOC POWERED HYDROGEN BUS SUPPORTS GUILDFORD'S AMBIENT PICNIC

The UK's first ever zero emission bus will give Surrey residents an alternative view of public transport at the Ambient Picnic 2005, Guildford's annual music art and environment festival.

The zero emission Mercedes Citaro which is on loan from Transport for London, is powered by hydrogen provided by BOC, the Surrey based industrial gases company. The bus which normally runs on route RV1 between Covent Garden and Tower Gateway, will be transporting picnickers to Shalford Park from the Artington and Cornhill park & ride via Guildford railway station.

The Citaro is one of three zero emission buses in use on London routes and is part of a two year trial across 10 European cities to improve understanding of how well hydrogen technology performs and the contribution it could make to solving urban air quality and climate change problems. BOC has made a substantial investment in the trial providing hydrogen storage facilities at BP’s refuelling depot in Hornchurch, Essex.

Since they first appeared on London streets in January 2004, the zero emission buses have generated interest in hydrogen as well as appreciation from commuters and the backing of London mayor Ken Livingston.

Said Carolin: “the zero emission hydrogen buses are proving just how practical and safe this clean, alternative fuel can be. “

“Because water is the only emission from the hydrogen fuel cell, the use of hydrogen technology can make a significant contribution to public transport planning as well as the various climate change and air quality management strategies being implemented by authorities throughout Surrey and other parts of the UK.”
