BOC URGES CAR DRIVERS TO BE READY FOR SUMMER

For many car drivers, the need to ensure the air conditioning system is ready for the summer comes well down the list of maintenance checks behind the oil, filters, tyres and brakes, but now is the right time to test for leaks, says BOC.

"The return of the warm weather means many things, but for car owners spring also signals the annual ritual of car maintenance. Before you begin to think of long summer journeys driving through the UK or Europe, you need to make sure your car’s air conditioning system is in shape for the hot weather when you are going to need it," says Robert Moore, BOC’s business manager, refrigerants.

One of the main causes of a car air conditioning system failing is due to a leak of refrigerant gas from the system. Until last year, any leaks in the air conditioning system of cars in the UK would have been undetectable by the human eye.

However, the refrigerant gas, Honeywell R-134aUV, launched last year by BOC in the UK, together with US company Honeywell, is a boost to customer confidence as it includes an ultraviolet dye so that any leaks can be physically seen.

"Since the launch last year we have been overwhelmed by the positive response to R-134aUV. Customer feedback has clearly shown that they are extremely pleased with the product's performance and what it means to the car maintenance industry, " says Moore. "The most effective use of R-134aUV can be obtained by charging the product into the system through the liquid phase. Information on this can be obtained by referring to the manufacturer’s guidelines/instructions on the operating modes of your charging equipment."

The gas contains a high-technology dye formulation that meets existing European Union standards. The effectiveness of ultraviolet dye for refrigerant leak detection has been recognised by a number of automotive manufacturers and has proved itself to be a valuable tool in the service after-market. The gas, which is available in 13.6kg disposable cans, is compatible with existing UV lamps currently used to detect leaks.

R-134aUV can not only be used to find an existing leak, it can be also used in a preventative role. During a car service, R-134aUV can be used to charge an existing R-134a system that does not contain the UV-detection dye. This will mean that future leaks will be easier to detect once the UV-detectable dye has been introduced into the air conditioning system.

"Summer's heat, dust, and stop-and-go traffic, will all take their toll on your car. A marginally operating air conditioning system is more likely to fail in hot weather and you can reduce the odds of failure through simple period maintenance by using R-134aUV," added Moore.
