BOC MEDICAL TO DELIVER KEY MESSAGES TO THE UK MEDICAL SECTOR
22 September 2006 - BOC Gases

BOC Medical will use three major medical conferences to promote its range of services and reinforce its position as a health care partner to the UK health sector. The benefits of heliox in treating patients with airway obstructions, such as acute asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, will be the key message at the Intensive Care Society’s spring conference in Torquay.

BOC Medical’s new Active Risk Management programme for hospitals will be promoted at this year’s Health Facilities Management Association in Nottingham.

The recently launched Entonox information pack for antenatal teachers in the UK will take centre stage as BOC Medical attends the Royal College of Midwives annual conference in Cardiff.

Heliox, consisting of 79 per cent helium and 21 per cent oxygen, deals with the symptoms associated with obstructions of the upper and lower airways. Heliox is three times less dense than air. This lower density reduces the amount of turbulent flow in the airways and therefore improves the delivery of oxygen and gas exchange in the lungs. This leads to a reduction in the work of breathing and can be seen by a relief in the patient's respiratory distress.

An additional benefit of heliox is that it increases the duration of the 'therapeutic window', allowing extra time for other medications to take effect. As a result the need for invasive interventions, such as mechanical ventilation, and the inherent risks, side effects and costs of such treatments may be reduced.

BOC Medical will use the HEFMA conference at the East Midlands Conference Centre to present its new Active Risk Management programme that offers help and advice for hospitals in the use of medical gases.

The programme, which begins with an audit of piped and cylinder supply, including the compilation of risk assessments, then progresses into policy and procedure drafting, training and an agreed risk-action plan, with optional extras, including e-learning, schematic drawing, task observation and a cylinder efficiency service.

The benefits of entonox and BOC Medical’s recently launched information pack on entonox for antenatal class teachers is the key message to visitors at the RCM annual conference at the Cardiff International Arena.

Entonox, one of the most versatile analgesic agents, is a 50:50 mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Because of its low blood/gas solubility, the effects of entonox are felt within three or four breaths, with pain relief achieved in less than two minutes.

The information pack, 'Everything You Need to Know About Entonox', includes a CD-ROM and Q&A booklet about the product, its uses and benefits. The free pack is being made available to NHS midwives and National Childbirth Trust antenatal class teachers.

Michael Simonsen, BOC Medical’s product manager, said: "These three conferences are an ideal opportunity for BOC Medical to talk directly to our key audiences and emphasise that we are a specialist business with a dedicated health care focus. In addition to our bread and butter business of medical gases, we now offer an Active Risk Management service to hospitals."
