A North Wales student has helped the University of Sheffield complete a hat-trick of wins of the BOC Award for the Best Chemical Engineering Student at a gala awards evening in London.

Heledd Charles-Williams received the prize from Nigel Hunton, BOC's managing director, Process Gas Solutions, at the 2004 Science Engineering & Technology Student of the Year Awards held at The Guildhall. Heledd receives £500 and a trophy and her university will receive £1,000.

The award was in recognition of Heledd's work on the granulation of zinc oxide using borate cream binder. Heledd, who comes from Anglesey in North Wales, has become the third winner from the University of Sheffield in five years of the BOC award, following in the footsteps of Lisa Smith and Mohammed El-Bachir, who won the award in 2003 and 2001 respectively.

The other shortlisted candidates for this year's chemical engineering award, which for the fifth year running was sponsored by BOC, were Christopher Handscomb from Cambridge University and Martin Leal of Bath University.

The judging panel for the BOC award consisted of Steve Trenchard, BOC's general manager, operations and controls technology, Peter Gulliver and Dr Alistair Nicholl from the Institution of Chemical Engineers.

The Science Engineering & Technology Student of the Year Awards have been dubbed the Oscars of the science, engineering and technology world. This year alone there were more than 500 entries from university students across the country in the 13 award categories.
