During the CPhI fair, BASF launched two new film-coating products --Kollicoat IR White and Kollicoat Protect. Kollicoat IR White is derived from BASF's proprietary X-fast technology, which ensures extremely rapid dispersibility of the product in water. 'This is an excellent example where a major strength of BASF lies -- the best experts from different application areas work closely together and combine their knowledge to develop superior products and solutions for our customers', says Eckart Stein, Group Vice President Strategic Marketing Fine Chemicals at BASF. The second product launched -- Kollicoat Protect -- is a combination of Kollicoat IR and polyvinyl alcohol. It provides an excellent moisture protection for sensitive drugs as well as taste masking for those with a bad taste. 'BASF now offers an answer for any film-coating question, no matter whether it is instant release, sustained release, enteric coating or moisture protection', explained Dr Tim Bölke, Director Strategic Business Unit Pharma Ingredients. BASF is investing in the Kollicoat portfolio to strengthen its position as coating expert and solution provider alongside the leading Kollidon range, including binders and disintegrants. Further line extensions are in the product pipeline. About years ago BASF entered the business field of polymers for film coating of pharmaceuticals. The first product was an enteric coating, followed by a sustained-release coating. During 2003 Kollicoat IR was introduced to the market as an instant-release film coating based on a new polymer. Coating systems are typically mixtures of polymers, plasticizers, colouring agents and other excipients, which can be stirred into water, or an organic solvent, to produce a dispersion for the film coating of solid oral dosage forms such as tablets. The world market for coating systems is estimated to be worth at approximately EUR 200 million in 2004, with a growth rate between 5% and 6%.
