BOC BOOSTING OXYGEN SUPPLY TO TATA STEEL OF INDIA
12 March 2003 - BOC Gases

BOC has contracted with Tata Steel of Jamshedpur, India, to supply oxygen for use in the company’s blast furnace. The multi-million-dollar contract is for a new oxygen plant that can produce up to some 220 metric tons a day of oxygen. BOC’s Indian subsidiary, BOC India Ltd., will install and commission the unit later this year.

"For the last four years BOC has contracted with Tata Steel to supply over 1,500 tons per day of oxygen, nitrogen and argon. But now they needed a fast solution to improve operational performance. We understood those needs and provided a tailored solution to satisfy their requirements," said Sanjiv Lamba, managing director, BOC India.

Tridibesh Mukherjee, deputy managing director, Tata Steel, said, "We have a window of opportunity that will let us increase production with our existing facilities . BOC was able to provide an economic and practical supply solution to fit our exacting program. This is why it is so important for steel producers to have a relationship with key suppliers who understand and can meet the demands of the industry".

Oxygen is added to enrich the hot air entering the blast furnace to increase production, and improve the operation and the overall economics of iron and steel production.

Tata Steel is India’s largest private steel producer, producing approximately 3.6 million tons per year of steel products at its integrated steel works located in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand state, India.

BOC is a leader in designing and delivering solutions for the global ferrous and non-ferrous metals industries. In addition to a wide range of industrial gases supply options, BOC offers expertise in combustion systems and operating practice, an array of environmental protection applications, and unparalleled technical support and customer service.
