BOC CELEBRATES FIRST DELIVERY OF BULK LIQUID OXYGEN TO THE ISLE OF MAN

The first–ever delivery of bulk liquid oxygen to the Isle of Man has been made to the island’s newly-built hospital by BOC. The delivery was made to two liquid medical oxygen vessels recently installed by BOC at the 252-bed Noble’s Hospital in the capital, Douglas.

The installation and delivery followed talks, first held in 1998, between BOC and the island’s emergency services, Health & Safety Executive, Department of Health and Social Security and the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, which runs the ferry between the island and the UK mainland. From the start the venture was characterised by careful planning and implementation between both parties, particularly as the Isle of Man, which has its own parliament, has many different regulations from the UK.

BOC’s north west area transport manager, Malcolm Sandywell, said "As it was the first time bulk liquid oxygen had been delivered to the island there were some concerns about safety, which through our awareness and safety presentations, we put everyone’s minds at rest."

Discussions were held between BOC and the island’s police to assess a route across the island from the port to the hospital for risks such as dangerous bends, particularly as the drive included part of the island’s famous TT motorbike course. The vessels, which were reprocessed by A1 Engineering, were driven to the island under police escort and craned in by a contractor.

The vessel and back-up at 225 hundred cubic metres (hcms) and 70 hcms respectively are twice the usual size at most mainland UK hospitals, to take into account contingencies for worst-case scenarios, such as cancellation of the ferry. Future tanker deliveries from the mainland will be once a week every four weeks.
