BOC will double the production capacity of its helium transfill facility in Bessemer, Alabama, a Birmingham suburb. A new compressor will be added that will double the production capacity from 12,000 standard cubic feet per hour (scfh) to 24,000 scfh effective early next year. Dan Morgan, U.S. helium business director, BOC, says, "We made this investment in the new compressor in response to growing demand for helium from our customers in the Southeast, a strategic market for BOC. Bessemer is now our largest helium transfill in the Southeast and serves as hub plant to back up our three other transfills in the regional network. The added capacity will increase security of supply for all helium customers in the region, not only those serviced directly from Bessemer." Morgan adds, "As the world’s largest supplier of helium, we are focused on providing customers the highest service levels available in the industry. The investment in Bessemer will increase our ability to move our helium supply quickly, efficiently and reliably to our customers." The Bessemer facility receives helium in bulk liquid containers and repackages it for use in a variety of high tech applications including fiber optic manufacture, magnetic resonance imaging, gas chromatography, leak testing, and superconductivity research.
