BOC HELPS NEW PROVIDENCE STUDENTS IMPROVE THEIR SCIENCE KNOWLEDGE
24 January 2002 - BOC Gases
| The science skills of students in the New Providence school district are getting a boost from a series of award-winning, educational videos sponsored by The BOC Group. |
For the second consecutive year, BOC is sponsoring the Science Screen Report science program, which presents the latest developments in science and technology in a format designed for students in grades 7 through 12. Jonathan Keaney, department head of science, New Providence High School, said, "The videos continue to be a useful classroom tool. They are an interesting and informative resource and provide time for pre- and post- video activities over the course of a normal lesson. In addition, their content is up-to-date and relevant to everyday life. We appreciate BOC's generosity in making the series available to the students of New Providence." Kent Masters, president, BOC Process Gas Solutions North America said, "We are pleased to sponsor the SSR series for the New Providence school district. We take our responsibility to the local community very seriously and hope this program will help students develop an increased understanding and appreciation of science and technology in today's world." The 2001-2002 series consists of seven master videotapes covering a variety of scientific subjects and disciplines, suitable for copying and distributing throughout the district. The videos present scientific principles in compelling and contemporary terms. For example, Biology: The Life And Times discusses research that is uncovering secrets of longer life, including one study of aging that revealed significant genetic differences between centenarians and people with shorter lifespans. The video Geology: Scientists Probe Earthquakes, demonstrates how scientists use seismometers and the Richter scale to measure and indicated earthquakes’ magnitude and what they’re doing to understand how earthquakes are generated. Other videos in the series are: Ecology: Life At The Edge Of The Sea; Chemistry: Changing States Of Matter; Physics: The Science Of Visual Light; Magnetism: Invisible Fields Of Force; and Energy: Electricity From The Moon.
