POULTRY PROCESSORS CHILL OUT WITH BOC TECHNOLOGY
15 January 2002 - BOC Gases
| BOC’s Combo Chiller system is enabling poultry processors to increase the accuracy and consistency of the quick-chilling in their combo bins. |
The Combo Chiller system uses carbon dioxide snow and a unique distribution system to maintain a consistent temperature throughout the combo bin. This ensures that all poultry in the bin will be chilled thoroughly and that it will meet U.S. Department of Agriculture requirements. "Temperature consistency is critical for poultry customers seeking to meet current regulations," said Carsten Wittrup, BOC’s global food marketing director. "The Combo Chiller system provides accurate and consistent temperature control within each combo and from bin to bin, resulting in improved quality and fewer product returns." The combo bin is a mobile unit that can be rolled into place inside the processing plant. As poultry enter the system, a turntable begins to evenly distribute the meat throughout the bin. At the same time, a bank of specially designed snow horns sweeps over the bin, automatically distributing a fine layer of CO2 over the product. The CO2 injection rate can be adjusted to accommodate process variations such as incoming product temperature, desired final temperature and product fill rate. The system automatically controls the chilling process, eliminating the labor, handling, storage and safety problems associated with the transport and application of the dry ice pellets used in similar systems. Plus, the BOC Combo Chiller system is more cost effective when compared with conventional pellet methods. "We developed this technology by working closely with our customers, and the result is a one-of-a-kind system that not only saves our customers money but also gives them greater control over their products to produce higher-quality meat on a consistent basis," Wittrup said. BOC provides a single source for cryogenic and non-cryogenic gases, state-of-the-art food safety and cryogenic freezing and chilling technologies and a variety of technologies for growth and harvest, packaging, preparation and preservation, storage, transport, process water recycling and disinfection, and wastewater treatment and distribution.
