MECHATHERM & BOC TO PROVIDE ADVANCED OXYGEN-ASSISTED TILTING ROTARY FURNACE TECHNOLOGY
14 February 2002 - BOC Gases
| Mechatherm International Ltd. and BOC are offering secondary aluminum and dross processors a combined furnace and combustion package to enhance the energy efficiency, productivity and environmental performance of their melting operations. |
Mechatherm is based in the UK and supplies furnaces to the aluminum industry. It has partnered with BOC to market its tilting rotary furnace technology worldwide. BOC will combine its low emission swirl oxy fuel burner technology with Mechatherm's oxygen-assisted combustion systems, technology and combustion expertise. Ken Grieshaber, general manager of advanced combustion systems, BOC, said, "Mechatherm is a globally recognized player in the aluminum furnace supply industry. We believe this combination will offer aluminum and dross processors a robust, flexible system that will handle a wide variety of raw materials, while increasing productivity and reducing emissions. Chris Emes, managing director, Mechatherm, said, "Mechatherm has always invested in quality and high performance. We believe that BOC’s innovative and flexible burner technology coupled with our enhanced furnace will provide significant benefits in terms of increased productivity, reduction in operational costs and more environmentally friendly operations for aluminum producers worldwide." Mechatherm’s tilting rotary furnace technology combines expertise in furnace design with modern process capabilities. Mechatherm’s furnace systems can offer very flexible operation tailored to individual customers’ requirements, including excellent fuel efficiency, high melt rates, greatly reduced salt flux requirements, and reduced waste gas handling and emissions system sizing requirements. The BOC LES Burner maximizes heat transfer rates while minimizing pollutants such as NOx, or nitrogen oxides. The burner uses a staged combustion approach, which allows the highly luminous, low-turbulence flame to operate at the peak radiant efficiency. In addition, the burner’s flame-shaping technology allows it to produce stable flames at various oxygen-to-air ratios and over a wide range of firing rates. The aluminum industry recycles over 8,000 million pounds of scrap each year to supply many important markets such as automotive, food packaging and construction. Recycling aluminum scrap saves nearly 95% of the energy needed for primary refining of aluminum ore (bauxite). BOC is a leading supplier of gases and gas technology to the aluminum recycling industry, providing technology used to melt and refine molten aluminum efficiently. Mechatherm International Ltd. is a privately owned thermo-mechanical engineering and project management company with roots dating back to 1973, when three engineers joined to offer the industry enhanced technology and services to overcome the drastic changes seen with energy price increases and the ensuing western recession. This foundation is still very much at the heart of Mechatherm’s modern operations, with the second generation maintaining the solid engineering tradition and flexible, tailored solution approach to each client. Mechatherm has firmly established itself as a world leader in the field of aluminum melting and holding furnaces with a very enviable list of satisfied clients and references. This vast knowledge and proven experience has gone into the company’s range of recycling systems and furnaces with the keystones being high yields, low energy consumption and solid engineering application. With its own in-house detailed engineering and software programming expertise, every solution is provided to integrate effectively and seamlessly within the client’s existing processes and procedures to fulfill their needs. Further information about Mechatherm is available at http://www.mechatherm.com BOC’s metals market sector is a leader in designing and delivering solutions for the global ferrous and non-ferrous metals industries. In addition to a wide range of industrial gases supply options, BOC offers expertise in combustion systems and operating practice, an array of environmental protection applications, and unparalleled technical support and customer service.
