The benefits to ambulance crews, community midwives and nurses in the UK of BOC Medical’s entonox version of its innovative lightweight oxygen CD cylinder were outlined at the Pain Society’s annual conference in Bournemouth earlier this month (April). Entonox, one of the most versatile analgesic agents, is a 50:50 mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Because of its low blood/gas solubility, the effects of entonox are felt within three or four breaths, with pain relief achieved in less than two minutes. It is hoped the cylinder will prove as popular with medical personnel as its predecessor, the conventional steel D size. In addition, like the oxygen CD cylinder, the entonox cylinder is constructed in a ‘fibre wound’, which makes it around 25 per cent lighter than the D cylinder. The cylinder features a ‘push on, pull off’ valve design with a built-in regulator and BS56682 entonox outlet. This allows quick changeovers compared with conventional cylinders. Other benefits of the ready-to-use cylinder, complete with handle. include a permanently live contents gauge, which indicates how much entonox is left in the cylinder. Dave Owers, BOC Medical, marketing manager, said: "I am sure that the entonox CD cylinder will prove of great benefit to community midwives, nurses and ambulance personnel. The reduction in weight will be a huge benefit to them and allow them to carry more additional equipment." BOC is the leading provider of medical gases to the UK health care industry and has been supplying the NHS for nearly 50 years.
