BOC CELEBRATES UK CONTRACT SUCCESS WITH ATOMIC ENERGY LEADER
09 May 2002 - BOC Gases
| BOC has been awarded a major contract, worth nearly £18m, by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority to supply industrial and special gases to all its UK facilities. |
The deal, initially for six years with a four-year extension period, will see BOC deliver a range of gases such as liquid nitrogen, argon and helium to the UKAEA’s major sites at Dounreay, Culham, Windscale, Harwell and Winfrith. Mike Dennis, BOC’s business director, special gases, and Elily Gowers, UKAEA’s contract officer, officially signed the contract earlier this month at BOC’s Guildford office. The UKAEA, which is recognised as the world leader in managing, decommissioning, environmental restoration and fusion research, will use the gases to provide a safe and secure environment for decommissioning work and research into new technologies for clean sources of renewable energy. Mike Dennis said: "BOC are delighted to have been awarded this long term partnership contract, particularly as previous contracts in the industry have been for a maximum of three years. UKAEA are undergoing enormous change at this time, particularly at Dounreay with a decommissioning strategy spanning sixty years. BOC is ready to play its part in UKAEA’s implementation of its future plans." As well as praising the contribution of BOC’s distribution, customer engineering services and key customer site services teams, Mike added that key to winning this contract was the company’s understanding of the joint needs of UKAEA and Johnson Controls Limited, UKAEA’s purchasing facility managers, with particular emphasis on safety, security of supply, environmentally responsibility, cost efficiency and forward thinking. "BOC was able to demonstrate these characteristics through the existing service levels to Dounreay, one of UKAEA’s strategically important facilities, where BOC has provided uninterrupted supplies of liquid nitrogen and compressed gases for many years," Mike said. David Malkin, JCL’s commercial nuclear industry manager, said: "This is a landmark deal for both UKAEA and BOC and recognises the benefits of longer term strategic partnerships. BOC has a clear vision of the future and one which I believe meets both UKAEA’s and our strategic plans. Contracting services out to industry is part of our philosophy, which will release staff to concentrate on core activities and the BOC contract will provide this platform. UKAEA is very impressed with the company’s commitment to safety and security."
