BOC PROVIDES ADVANCED ENERGY INJECTION SYSTEM TO STEEL RECYCLING INDUSTRY
21 May 2002 - BOC Gases
| BOC has announced the first Australian placement of its patented Burnjector technology, an advanced chemical energy injection system for the electric arc furnace, at OneSteel’s steel scrap recycling plant at Rooty Hill, Sydney. |
The Burnjector system is a proven burner and solids injection technology in a single unit. The system’s nozzle technology is patented to provide a unique flame shroud for maintaining a narrow, concentrated and powerful jetstream over a distance of up to three times greater than those of systems using conventional shrouding. Mike Bishop, process specialist, BOC Australia, said, "Burnjector technology, with the ability of its unique shroud to carry the reactant into the molten steel bath, enhances the energy efficiency, productivity, environmental performance and safety of EAFs in the steel recycling process." Electric arc furnaces are used to melt scrap steel for recycling. Oxygen and solid carbon must be injected into the molten steel to promote furnace efficiency and ensure product quality. A OneSteel spokesperson said BOC’s Burnjector technology is the leading new technology for the EAF. "It has definite advantages over competing technologies. Having both the burner and solids injection technology in a single unit is a significant advance over other injection systems. The Burnjector will enable us to achieve higher productivity and better metallurgical control, along with savings in electrode consumption, electrical power and refractory wear." The OneSteel placement is BOC’s second installation of the Burnjector technology since BOC announced its commercialization at CitiSteel in Claymont, Delaware, U.S. Ken Grieshaber, general manager, advanced combustion systems, BOC, said, "The adoption of this new technology by steel mills in the U.S. and Australia demonstrates BOC’s ability to deliver cutting-edge technological solutions to customers around the globe." OneSteel Market Mills is Australia’s leading manufacturer and supplier of a comprehensive range of steel rod, bar, wire, rope, pipe, tube and structural steels.
