BOC INSTALLS OXY-FUEL BURNER SYSTEMS AT JOHNSON MATTHEY’S PRECIOUS METAL REFINERY

BOC is working with Johnson Matthey Chemicals to improve the operational efficiency and environmental performance of their new rotary furnaces at its precious metal refinery with the installation of three BOC low emission swirl oxy-fuel burner systems.

Johnson Matthey has recently commissioned a new smelting facility at its precious metal refinery in Brimsdown, London. The new melting and refining facility, which recycles spent catalysts and other feedstock to recover precious metals, includes three new rotary furnaces fitted with BOC’s LES burner systems. The oxy-fuel burners are designed to maximize heat transfer rates while minimizing pollutants such as nitrogen oxides.

"Since we installed the new furnaces with the BOC burner systems, we’ve gained additional operational flexibility and have reduced gaseous emissions levels. This major refurbishment allows us to increase capacity and treat a wider range of input materials while improving our environmental performance," said Lee Sweetland, smelting technical manager, Johnson Matthey.

The BOC LES burner uses a staged combustion approach, which allows the highly luminous, low-turbulence flame to operate at peak radiant efficiency. In addition, the burner’s flame-shaping technology allows it to produce stable flames over a range of oxygen-to-fuel ratios and firing rates.
