BOC EXPERTS STRESS IMPORTANCE OF RAW MATERIAL PURITY AND SUPPLY IN OPTICAL FIBER PRODUCTION
26 August 2002 - BOC Gases

Optical fiber manufacturers concerned with achieving top quality while holding supply costs in check will want to hear what a trio of BOC experts have to say about the importance of raw material purity and supply.

Dr. Art Shirley, director of technology and commercialization, fiber optic solutions, BOC, and co-authors Glenn Rush and Katy Lee, also of BOC’s fiber optic solutions group, will present their findings at the Optical Society of America’s 2002 meeting at the Hyatt Orlando Hotel in Orlando, Florida.

"The production of optical fibers requires rigorous materials handling to ensure the highest quality final product. At the same time, the purity of the gases and chemicals used in optical fiber manufacturing can significantly impact the cost of those materials, not to mention the quality of the final product." Shirley said.

"The need for low optical losses in fibers translates into very high purities for the gases and chemicals used in during production," Shirley adds. "Gases such as helium, argon, hydrogen, oxygen and others used in optical fiber manufacturing must be delivered at purities of 99.9995 percent purity or greater, and may still require point-of-use purification."

"Configuring the supply of these high-purity gases to the scale of the manufacturing effort is a critical cost-control consideration," he adds. "In the case of gases such as helium, recycling is a viable, perhaps even necessary, means of assuring adequacy of supply and controlling cost."
