BOC GAZY TO SUPPLY COMBUSTION EQUIPMENT AND GASES TO BATE
05 September 2002 - BOC Gases

BOC Gazy has been awarded a contract for the supply of industrial gases and combustion equipment to Baterpol’s lead smelting and refining facility in Katowice, Poland.

Under the contract, BOC will install its Low Emission Swirl oxy-fuel burner system, industrial gases and related equipment as part of the conversion of Baterpol’s lead recovery rotary furnace to oxy-fuel melting. The conversion is aimed at enhancing the furnace’s operational efficiency and environmental performance.

"By converting to oxy-fuel and installing the BOC LES burner, we expect to gain additional operational flexibility. This major refurbishment also allows us to increase capacity while still improving our environmental performance," said Piotr Tomecki, Baterpol board member.

The BOC LES burner is designed to maximize heat transfer rates while minimizing pollutants such as nitrogen oxides. The burner uses a staged combustion approach, which allows the highly luminous, low-turbulence flame to operate at the peak radiant efficiency. In addition, the burner’s flame-shaping technology allows it to produce stable flames over a range of oxygen-to-fuel ratios and firing rates.

Stanislaw Malinowski, PGS business director, BOC Gazy said, "We are pleased Baterpol has selected us, a good example of BOC’s ability to use its combustion expertise to deliver solutions globally. We hope this contract is the beginning of a long-term relationship between our companies.

Baterpol Limited was established in October 2001 as the result of the merging of two Impexmetal group companies, a battery breaking company and the lead smelting department of the non-ferrous mill, Szopienice. The company collects some 50,000 tons a year of used car batteries and transforms them into lead, lead alloys and a variety of lead products (tapes, shots, pipes etc.). About 80 per cent of production is sold on the local market, the remainder is exported.

BOC’s metals market sector is a leader in designing and delivering solutions for the global ferrous and non-ferrous metals industries. In addition to a wide range of industrial gases supply options, BOC offers expertise in combustion systems and operating practice, an array of environmental protection applications, and unparalleled technical support and customer service.
