BOC Gases has recently signed contracts with the Shotton Paper Company for the supply of a new 30 tonne per day oxygenation system for the treatment of waste water at the Shotton site in Deeside. The plant, designed by BOC, combines the benefits of high purity oxygen and air. At the heart of the system are a 24 tonne per day oxygen pressure swing adsorption plant and a new Vitox oxygenation and mixing system.

This is the largest oxygen PSA yet sold for effluent treatment in the UK, serving the largest integrated pulp and paper mill in the UK, producing 460,000 tonnes of newsprint a year from pulp that is 65 per cent recycled and 35 per cent virgin fibre.

In pulp and paper production, huge quantities of water are involved. In a modern mill, water consumption of 14 tonnes per tonne of paper is common, with up to five times that amount in circulation around the process at any one time. The Shotton effluent treatment plant is one of the largest industrial treatment plants in the UK, with a population equivalent of about 150,000 and is currently undergoing redevelopment.

BOC was selected as the supplier because of its successful track record and acknowledged process and engineering expertise.

The Vitox plant design will incorporate the newly patented Long Main variation, which provides a very efficient system over a wide range of oxygen demands and is particularly well suited to the rectangular shaped oxygenation lagoon. The process incorporates six pumps, each capable of pumping nearly 2000 tonnes of water per hour and together dissolving up to 30 tonnes of oxygen per day, the majority from the PSA unit with some from a liquid oxygen tank. At lower oxygen demands one or two of the pumps can shut down, providing savings in power, with the remaining pumps continuing to mix and oxygenate the lagoon.

The customised and novel design enabled BOC to win this order in the face of very tough competition from other gas companies and conventional air based technology.

The 24 tonne per day Novox PSA, which is currently being built by BOC Packaged Plants, and the oxygen control equipment will be maintained by BOC for the 10 year contract period. The PSA is one of the latest lithium based sieve plants offering improved performance in terms of power efficiency and product capacity.

The overall project is scheduled for commissioning in April 2001.
