BOC AND MORE TO PROVIDE STATE-OF-THE-ART ENERGY INJECTION SYSTEMS TO STEEL INDUSTRY
14 June 2001 - BOC Gases
| BOC, a major supplier to the global steel industry, is offering metals producers another way to enhance the energy efficiency, productivity, environmental performance and safety of the steelmaking process. |
BOC has partnered with a leading engineering and manufacturing company to provide state-of-the-art chemical energy systems and related services for Electric Arc Furnaces in Europe. MORE S.r.l. of Italy will be the exclusive licensee and manufacturer of BOC's Burnjector technology, combining its chemical energy injection technology, known as a Module, with the Burnjector, for use in EAFs. "We have always paid attention to innovation and to new ideas that can be complementary to our own products. This is a perfect opportunity for MORE; we want to make good use of it," said Lucio Londero, MORE's president. Ben Van den Hooven, President of BOC's Process Systems division, said, "MORE's technology is already recognized as best-in-class. We believe that combining the Module with BOC's Burnjector will offer steelmakers unsurpassed performance for years to come." EAFs melt scrap steel for recycling. Oxygen and solid carbon must be injected into the molten steel to promote efficiency and ensure the product meets certain specifications. MORE's Module is a combination of two distinct injectors that deeply penetrate molten steel with carbon and oxygen, while simultaneously operating as a high-efficiency burner. BOC's Burnjector has a pioneering nozzle technology that is part of a patented system that includes a supersonic flame shroud surrounding supersonic stream of oxygen and solids such as carbon. This technology enables the Burnjector to maintain its narrow, concentrated and powerful jetstream for as much as three times the distance of systems using sub-sonic shrouding. Use of the Burnjector/ Module combination can reduce the number of injectors required, thereby lowering capital and maintenance costs and allows the EAF steel producer to effectively utilise a wider range of raw materials.
