BOC PROVIDES ADVANCED ENERGY INJECTION SYSTEM TO STEEL INDUSTRY
16 August 2001 - BOC Gases
| BOC has announced the first North American placement of its Burnjector technology, an advanced, chemical energy injection system for the Electric Arc Furnace, at a Delaware carbon plate steel mill. |
The Burnjector has a pioneering nozzle technology that is part of a patented system that includes a supersonic flame shroud surrounding supersonic streams of oxygen and carbon. This technology enables the Burnjector to maintain its narrow, concentrated and powerful jetstream for as much as three times the distance of systems using sub-sonic shrouding. BOC is providing the Claymont-based CitiSteel with a Burnjector system, which enhances the energy efficiency, productivity, environmental performance and safety of the steelmaking process. BOC also is providing related products and energy expertise and will continue to supply CitiSteel with oxygen, nitrogen and argon from its nearby air separation unit. Greg Buragino, CitiSteel's vice president of manufacturing said, "The Burnjector provides burner and injection technology, all in one package. Right now we have a burner and consumable carbon lance in the slag door, with a fixed oxygen lance. We should be able to achieve higher efficiency by closing the slag door, tightening the furnace and injecting from the sidewalls at the cold spots. "BOC stepped up to the plate with more than just equipment. Their technology has some advantages over the competition. But besides being a supplier, BOC is our neighbor, and has a stake in our business above and beyond their competitors. We trust them," Buragino said. Ken Grieshaber, BOC's general manager of advanced combustion systems, said, "CitiSteel's plans for improving productivity and lowering costs created a perfect fit for BOC's Burnjector technology. CitiSteel's thorough and rigorous evaluation process impressed our team. They were adamant on having a system that not only delivers lance oxygen and burner capabilities, but also handles their carbon injection needs." "CitiSteel also wanted a system that can grow with them over the next few years. BOC's approach is to work alongside them to accomplish their long-term objectives," Grieshaber said. Electric arc furnaces melt scrap steel for recycling. Oxygen and solid carbon must be injected into the molten steel to promote efficiency and ensure the product meets certain specifications.
