TRANSATLANTIC SUCCESS FOR BOC
26 September 2001 - BOC Gases
| A BOC employee has been recognised for his work in advancing heat treatment technology by receiving a prestigious American industry award. |
Paul Stratton, global technical manager at BOC Holbrook, has been presented with this year’s Bodycote/Lindberg Thermal Processing best paper award by the American Society for Metals Heat Treating Society. The award is in recognition of the paper ‘modelling the gas quenching of a gear wheel’, which Paul and co-author, ex-BOC Gases America employee, Doctor Dustin Ho submitted to the society’s conference in 2000. The paper, which is based on computational fluid dynamics modelling and took a year to complete, focuses on the use of environmentally friendly gases to replace oil for the quenching of heat treated parts. The patented technology cools the parts with jets of high pressure nitrogen or nitrogen/hydrogen mixtures and gives the operator complete control over the quenching process. The annual award, established in 1997, recognises a paper that represents an advancement in heat treating technology, promotes heat treating in some substantial way or represents a clear advancement in managing the business of heat treating. Sponsored by UK-based company, Bodycote Thermal Processing, the award includes two commemorative plaques for each of the winners and a $1,000 cash prize, to be shared equally by the authors. Paul said: "Dustin and I are absolutely delighted to receive this prestigious work, which is the culmination of a great deal of hardwork by the two of us."
