BOC EDWARDS DEVELOPS UNIQUE ULTRA HIGH PURITY AMMONIA GAS PRODUCTION SYSTEM

BOC Edwards today announced that it has completed the design of a novel ultra-high purity ammonia gas production system utilizing a low grade liquid ammonia feedstock. The system is capable of annually producing up to150 tons of Grade 6.0+ liquid ammonia with a moisture content of less than 0.3ppm. High purity ammonia gas has applications in the semiconductor, LED, and flat panel display markets where low levels of metallic impurities and moisture are required for processing.

BOC Edwards plans to have its first production unit operating in Asia within the next six months. The Asian region leads the world in the production of flat panel display technology where large quantities of high purity ammonia are required. “It’s a very competitive business, where local raw material production is key to maintaining a compact supply chain, providing customers with low cost of ownership and timely deliveries,” said Peter Thomas, VP of Marketing for BOC Edwards Electronic Materials Division. “The project is also part of our corporate strategy to use the value of our technology to enhance the competitiveness of our Asian joint venture partners, ultimately improving service to our customers in the region.”

The process was designed using BOC Edwards’ modeling tools to predict gas and liquid flow streams under a variety of operating conditions. The system employs a vapor phase transfer operation for removal of metallic impurities and oil, which are common contaminants in raw anhydrous ammonia streams. Moisture is removed utilizing a chemical/mechanical dryer unit. The design is an improvement on existing units that require frequent downtime for cleaning and regeneration due to unpredictable levels of impurities in the raw ammonia feed stream. While the system was designed for large-scale plant production, the same design can be used for lower flow rates in end-user plant production schemes.
