NEW BOC DEAL SET TO BENEFIT THE ENVIRONMENT
05 October 2001 - BOC Gases

BOC and Swedish-based Chematur Engineering AB have signed a five year sales and marketing agreement to promote the use of Super Critical Water Oxidation for environmental applications.

BOC and Swedish-based Chematur Engineering AB have signed a five year sales and marketing agreement to promote the use of Super Critical Water Oxidation for environmental applications.

SCWO is a high pressure and temperature process which, in the presence of oxygen, completely oxidises organic matter in a matter of seconds. The reaction takes place at about 250 bar and 400 –600 degrees Celsius. The sterile end products of this process are water, carbon dioxide and inert inorganic material.

The first joint project between the two companies is to prove that SCWO is cost effective for the destruction of sewage sludge. This will provide an innovative alternative for water companies in complying with the recent changes in European environmental legislation which prohibits the disposal of sludge into the sea. It will also satisfy environmental and health concerns regarding the current practices of spreading sludge onto agricultural land or incineration.

Initial trials carried out on a pilot plant in Sweden have been encouraging. Later this month a more extensive trial will take place, sponsored by a number of UK water companies, BOC, CEAB and independently project managed by WS Atkins.

CEAB is an independent international engineering company based in Karlskoga, Sweden, who have a specialist division focusing on Super Critical Fluid processes including SCWO and other SCF reactions, extractions and parts cleaning.
