A new range of laboratory vacuum pumps from BOC Edwards offers lubricant-free vacuum pumping down to 0.07mbar. The innovative XDS range features a scroll mechanism with a unique bearing shield which ensures that there are no bearings, grease, or oil under vacuum and no bearing purge is required, providing a cleaner, more repeatable process. The standard, XDS is ideal for a wide range of ‘clean and dry’ small vacuum pump applications in commercial and academic scientific research laboratories; for example as a turbomolecular backing pump with surface analysis equipment, for lamp evacuation and in various thin film device manufacturing processes. The XDS-C is a chemically resistant version designed for wet chemistry applications, including vacuum gel drying, rotary evaporators, vacuum ovens, glove boxes and freeze drying. With no need to change or dispose of oil, the XDS is environmentally friendly and has a service requirement of just 10 minutes every one or two years. Thanks to the unique bearing shield design, all the pump bearings are fully isolated from the vacuum and process gases. Low noise levels (55dB(A) at ultimate vacuum), low vibration (<1.5mm/s) and a compact footprint of just 315 x 297 x 249mm, make XDS ideal for laboratory applications. Selectable gas ballast is provided as standard, ensuring suitability for pumping condensable vapours. XDS has a capacity of more than 200g/h water vapour. The standard model XDS offers an ultimate vacuum of 0.07mbar. XDS-C has an ultimate vacuum of 0.9mbar and is resistant to a wide range of chemicals including aliphatics, aromatics, alcohols, acids and solvents. Both models are available in 5m3/hr and 10m3/hr capacity.
