VACUUM PUMPING SYSTEM REDUCES INDUCTION MELTING COSTS

Leading vacuum pump manufacturer BOC Edwards announces the launch of a dry-vacuum pumping system for use in vacuum induction melting. The new package helps manufacturers optimise furnace running times by considerably reducing the need for maintenance and consumables.

Leading vacuum pump manufacturer BOC Edwards announces the launch of a dry-vacuum pumping system for use in vacuum induction melting. The new package helps manufacturers optimise furnace running times by considerably reducing the need for maintenance and consumables.

VIM furnaces are traditionally equipped with oil-lubricated rotary backing pumps. These pumps have high operating and maintenance costs. They require frequent oil changes and suffer performance loss as the oil degrades. There is also the risk of process contamination by the rotary pump oil.

Conversely, the new dry-pump VIM system from BOC Edwards requires very little maintenance. It has a large tolerance to particles created by the melt, and a clean residual vacuum, so there is no risk of contamination. It also offers improved cycle times and process efficiency compared to traditional systems.

The new package comprises a GV Drystar vacuum pump, Roots blower fitted with hydrokinetic coupling, and vapour booster. The integrated package is supplied complete with application-specific instrumentation. Systems are available for furnaces up to 12 tonnes, with pump speeds of up to 135,000m3/hr, and ultimate vacuums down to 10-4mbar.
