BOC has recently launched a Cyclo-plus and Iso-plus* range of customised pentane-based blends to meet the growing need for polyurethane foam blowing in the marketplace. Pentanes are growing in popularity as alternatives to hydrochlorofluorocarbons, or HCFCs. The latter have significant ozone depletion potential and must be phased-out as scheduled in the Montreal Protocol of 1987. EC and US regulations require that ozone-depleting substances used for foam blowing be phased out by 2004. BOC, the appointed distributor for Exxon pentanes in the UK, is working closely with the foam blowing industry in developing commercially and environmentally acceptable alternatives. The hydrocarbon alternatives, n-pentane, iso-pentane and cyclo-pentane, alone or in blends, have the advantage of zero ODP, have acceptable Lambda values (thermal insulation properties) and perform well in the foam matrix, as well as being competitive against other alternatives. BOC was one of the first global gases companies to see that growing environmental pressures and consumer-driven demand for a range of environmentally acceptable products for foam blowing presented an important business opportunity. BOC’s range of products will enable foam blowing companies to customise their requirements for blends of pentanes and hydroflurocarbon alternatives. Steve Waldron, BOC’s general manager, packaged chemicals, said: "Our strategic relationships with a number of hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon producers will allow us to meet the needs of the industry in supplying the widest range of blended or unblended foam blowing agents. BOC’s recent launch of its Cyclo-plus and Iso-plus range of pentane-based blends is a direct response to a market need."
