BOC TO BUILD BIGGEST HYDROGEN PLANT FOR HUNTSMAN
13 September 2000 - BOC Gases

Huntsman Petrochemicals and BOC have entered into a long-term contract for the supply of hydrogen and steam to Huntsman's manufacturing operations on Teesside.

BOC will invest around £30 million to construct a new 32,000 tonne a year hydrogen plant at Huntsman's North Tees site near Seal Sands. The new plant, which will be the largest out-sourced hydrogen plant in the UK, will supply high purity hydrogen by pipeline to Huntsman production facilities on Teesside at both Wilton and North Tees, as well as steam to North Tees under a 15-year supply contract.

The project also includes the building of essential new infrastructure such as pipelines and power supply cabling. Design and construction of the plant will be carried out and managed by Foster Wheeler Energy Limited, which has formed an alliance with BOC.

Peter Huntsman, president and CEO of Huntsman Corporation commented: "This initiative is another key step forward in our efforts to revitalise the chemical industry on Teesside. Those efforts are continuing apace and we are actively seeking political and economic development support to help us realise our ambitious plans."

David Parkin, Huntsman vice president of purchasing and transportation said: "This project is of vital importance to Huntsman. A secure and competitive supply of utilities such as hydrogen and steam is essential to our existing facilities on Teesside, to our expansion plans and to our efforts to attract new investment to Teesside."

The go-ahead for the project will create up to 100 jobs during the construction phase and will lead to greater job security within the organisations involved. Construction will begin in the autumn and be completed by October 2001.

Stephen Thornton, vice president, BOC Process Gas Solutions, said: "We are delighted to have won this contract with Huntsman, which is an increasingly important force in the chemical industry in Europe. This plant will extend and strengthen our supply capability for our customers at Teesside and consolidates our position as the leading supplier of all industrial gases in the area, in fact BOC's Teesside facility is the largest industrial gases complex in Europe. This is particularly important to us given the pre-eminent position of Teesside in the UK as a world class chemical manufacturing facility, which is seeking to attract further investment from major players in the chemicals market."

"This project demonstrates the strength of our alliance with Foster Wheeler and the capability and services this brings to our customers for key utilities and raw materials. We are well positioned to provide a comprehensive package for this type of integrated scheme, both in Europe and beyond, as the hydrogen economy develops to meet the environmental challenges of the future," said Dick Grant, chief executive, BOC Process Gas Solutions.
