EASTMAN SHOWS ITS WARES AT MDMW 2005
At Medical Device Manufacturers 2005 West, which is being held in Anaheim, California, USA, on 10-12 January 2005, Eastman Chemical Co will demonstrate that its expertise in speciality plastics is the clear choice for medical device designers. Eastman's speciality plastics offer device designers materials that are chemically resistant, tough and water clear -- even after sterilization. At the show, the company will highlight its (Web-site www.clearlymedical.com) dedicated to plastic solutions for the medical device industry. The site features case studies to demonstrate Eastman plastics' clarity, toughness, chemical resistance and safety when used in medical devices such as syringes and blood recovery systems. 'The site demonstrates the versatility that our plastics can bring to a project engineer, whether it is in moulding complex shapes or retaining clarity after sterilization,' said Thijs Jaarsma, Eastman's Global Market Development Manager. Eastman will also be featuring its EMAC/EBAC speciality polyethylene copolymers, which provide versatility and functionality to product and packaging engineers, particularly in the design of mono-layer and multi-layer films, extrusion coatings, or moulded articles as property modifiers for other resins. On Tuesday, 11 January Eastman Senior Research Associate Eric Moskala, Ph.D. will present a workshop on ‘Understanding Causes of Failure in Medical Devices’ as part of the MDMW conference programme. Dr Moskala is a recognized industry authority of the medical applications of plastics. His research covers environmental stress cracking, polymer blends, as well as fracture and fatigue in engineering plastics. Gary Hawkins, Eastman's global medical applications development representative will discuss the main trends and requirements related to pharmaceutical and medical packaging applications, as well as the advantages offered by transparent, amorphous co-polyester and copolyethylene resins with physical properties suitable for the demanding requirements of these applications. In particular, Hawkins will focus on copolyester elastomers for fluid delivery bags and tubing, glass replacement in pharmaceutical bottles, and as film solutions for device packaging.
