BTG COLLABORATES WITH INO TO DEVELOP PHOTONIC TECHNOLOGY
08 October 2006 - BTG
| BTG, the global technology commercialisation company, today announced that it has signed a strategic alliance agreement with INO, Canada’s largest optics and photonics expertise centre, that will provide the opportunity to co-invest in the development of forward-looking uses for photonics. |
This arrangement will create value for both companies by offering INO access to BTG’s expertise in intellectual property and technology transfer, while allowing BTG to utilise INO’s capabilities to assess, prototype, and deliver photonics solutions to a wide range of industries. The companies will work together to develop photonics technology in several areas, including microoptics & microsystems, applied optical systems, fibre optics, optical communications and lasers. The market for photonics technology is huge given the diverse applications, optoelectronics components alone generated $56 billion in revenues (OIDA, Optoelectronics Industry Development Association). The launch of this relationship signals a shift in the market’s appreciation for the varied applications of photonics, suggesting value in the technology well beyond its uses in the currently down-trodden telecommunications sector. The co-developed solutions will be marketed across the biophotonics, photonics, manufacturing, transportation & forestry, security, & aerospace, and telecommunications industries. This unique business model broadens the scope of BTG’s activities, opening doors to technology co-development and partnering arrangements less typical for technology transfer organisations of its type. The structure will provide BTG and INO with more flexibility and ease of idea exchange as they actively broaden the uses for photonics. Anthony V. Lando, BTG’s Chief Operating Officer said, “The alliance with INO will allow BTG to become a development partner to our customers, enhancing the value of the technology by bringing it closer to market rather than just providing technology licensing. We can now benefit from INO’s experience in targeting companies working with broad applications for photonics.” Jean-Guy Paquet, INO’s President and Chief Operating Officer added, “INO will offer key expertise in photonics, markets and potential customer opportunities, as well as broadening the uses for this exciting technology area. In exchange, we have gained a capable partner with whom to structure a powerful intellectual property portfolio. We look forward to a prosperous relationship.”
