BTG the global technology commercialisation company today announced a licence agreement with Kudos Pharmaceuticals under which KuDOS has been granted worldwide, exclusive rights to the new cancer drug AQ4N. KuDOS will be responsible for the further development and commercialisation of the drug. BTG has received a signature fee and will be entitled to milestone and other payments, and ultimately a royalty on sales.

AQ4N is a hypoxic cell cytotoxin that is currently in Phase I clinical trial. It is a prodrug that is designed to be selectively activated within solid tumours where it eliminates cancer cells that are relatively resistant to conventional treatments. In experimental models the drug has been shown to substantially enhance the therapeutic effects of several established cancer drugs, and to significantly boost the effects of radiotherapy. In principle, the drug may be used in treating a very broad range of cancers, including common solid tumours such as lung, breast, pancreas and ovarian.

Dr Roger Harrison, Director of Licensing for BTG’s Health Medical and BioTechnologies division commented "This licence agreement demonstrates again BTG’s track record in moving early stage pharmaceutical technologies into commercial development. AQ4N is now the sixth licensed cancer drug in BTG’s portfolio of revenue earning pharmaceuticals. KuDOS is a company with a strategic focus on cancer drugs which enhance conventional therapies, and we are pleased to be able to match AQ4N with that focus."

KuDOS Pharmaceuticals’ Chief Executive, Barrie Ward, said: "KuDOS is very excited to have obtained the licence to this important new drug which should have a major role in the treatment of solid tumours."
