PMS 601 PROVIDES NOVEL APPROACH TO FIGHTING HIV WITH POTENTIAL TO IMPROVE EFFECTS OF OTHER EXISTING THERAPIES
07 October 2006 - BTG
| BTG, the global technology commercialisation company, has acquired a new class of drug candidates, discovered in France, that are targeted to treat advanced and chronic HIV infection. |
Pre-clinical studies have demonstrated that PMS 601, the lead candidate in this series of piperazine derivatives, can prevent viral infection and replication. Initial studies indicate PMS 601 can also cross the blood brain barrier. This, together with its anti-platelet activating factor activity, may reduce brain inflammation associated with dementia in end-stage AIDS. Early research has also indicated that this new class of therapeutics may improve the effects of existing HIV/AIDS drugs, such as AZT. PMS 601 was discovered in research conducted by the Université Paris 7, Denis Diderot and the Life Sciences Division of the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique. Further pre-clinical studies by these institutions will be funded by the French government agency promoting and financing innovation, Agènce Nationale de la Valorisation de la Récherche. BTG will provide commercial advice and support for these studies and seek appropriate commercial partners for further development. “This acquisition brings an exciting new approach to treat HIV using compounds with potent antiviral activity and the potential to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. We believe that these discoveries will play a pivotal role in treating HIV by supplementing existing drug combinations used to fight the disease,” said Al Renzi, BTG’s Vice President and Business Manager for Inflammation, Immunology and Infectious Diseases. “These new compounds complement our existing infectious disease portfolio and support our strategy to acquire innovative technologies in areas of significant clinical need where BTG can accelerate commercial development. We are also delighted to be working with both CEA and Paris7 University in France, which is the result of our efforts to extend and consolidate our presence here,” he added.
