BTG LICENCES THE ELECTRO-ABSORPTION MODULATOR TECHNOLOGY

BTG, the global technology commercialisation company, today announced it has signed licensing agreements with Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd., a telecommunications manufacturer, and NTT Electronics Corporation, a worldwide supplier of high performance opto-electronic products, for the Electro-Absorption Modulator technology.

EAMs, which are used to produce high quality modulated optical signals at data rates of 2.5Gbit/s and above, play an integral role in making more efficient use of long distance optical networks.

The increasing demand on optical communication networks is forcing operators to adopt even higher capacity systems. As a result, systems manufacturers are looking for ways of increasing the operating speed of the optical components that form the basis of these systems. EAMs are one way to achieve this. The market for EAMs is expanding rapidly, with US sales alone estimated to rise dramatically to $2 billion.

The quantum well EAM technology was developed by researchers at BTexact Technologies, BT’s advanced research and technology business. BTG acquired rights to commercialise the portfolio of patents protecting this ground-breaking technology. BTG is building on its commercialisation success by pursuing other key players in this market sector.

Anthony V. Lando, Executive Vice President and Director of BTG’s Electronics, Engineering & Information Technologies division commented: "When BTG assessed this portfolio, we identified the quantum well electro-absorption patents as having significant commercial value. EAMs are widely used across the communications industry, and it is rewarding to see companies who are using this technology in their networks recognising the need to take a licence. We hope to reach similar licence agreements with other optical communications companies."

Lawrence Bickers, Head of IP Exploitation at BTexact Technologies, said: "The patent portfolio arose from work being carried out at BTexact Technologies on high-speed optical modulators. BT licensed exclusive rights to the technology to BTG, which has since focused its commercialisation expertise and resources on specific geographic and market sectors enabling this technology to be licensed to a wider audience and freeing BTexact to focus on developing other intellectual property."
