BTG GRANTS NEWLIFE TECHNOLOGIES INC. A LICENCE TO AN INNOVATIVE MEDICAL MONITORING TECHNOLOGY
15 April 2003 - BTG

BTG, a global technology commercialisation company, announced today that it has granted a licence to Newlife Technologies Inc. (Midlothian, VA) for an innovative non-invasive medical sensor technology.

The licence covers use of the technology in a variety of multi-million dollar healthcare applications. Newlife will use this technology to launch its next generation of personal monitoring systems that will stream wirelessly, physiological data from a user.

The technology is based on the unique configuration of a fiber optic coupler that behaves as a contact strain gauge, sensitive to localised body motions and low frequency vibrations of the body. Physiological measurements are safe because they are non-invasive, non-electrical, and non-conducting, the sensor does not come in contact with the skin.

Fully functioning prototypes similar to the configuration of a wristwatch have been developed that can stream physiological data from a patient wirelessly. Existing physiological monitoring technology is limited to the use of wired electrical contacts and cumbersome constrictive devices.

Steve Burton, President of Newlife Technologies stated, "We are excited to have gained access to this highly developed technology that we will use to enhance significantly our existing heart rate monitoring product (the HEARTalker Personal Trainer Heart Rate Monitor)."

BTG acquired the rights to the technology in 1999 from Empirical Technologies Corporation, a Virginia-based medical development and research company. BTG will continue to license this technology in other key application areas including the hospital market (intensive care, emergency room and in-hospital patient monitoring, etc.) and other physiological monitoring applications. These collective markets are estimated to be worth $700 million.

"BTG's skill in securing a strong worldwide patent position, along with their technical marketing expertise, enabled us not only to derive value from our technology, but to continue our development work in critical care monitoring and other respiratory disorders," said Dr. David Gerdt, President of Empirical Technologies Corporation.

"BTG is confident that Newlife Technologies has the capability to effectively implement this technology to create the next generation of portable medical monitoring devices," said Anthony V. Lando, Executive VP and Director of BTG's Electronics, Engineering and Information Technologies Division. "This technology will enable Newlife to extend their product line in an exciting new direction, and will help them get to market quickly with an improved range of personal monitoring systems."
