BTG, a global leader in commercialising technology, announced today the acquisition of a technology which could significantly improve the securing of medical devices such as intravenous lines and catheters, using a unique line lock. The Spinoza Universal Line Lock was invented by Dr Marc Spinoza, a paediatrician who has worked in many London teaching hospitals. At present, medical devices are secured by traditional tapes or dressings. However, these can obscure the device and/or do not allow any subsequent adjustments once in place. The SULL is a specially braided tube which increases in diameter when compressed, allowing insertion of a line or catheter. When the braided tube is released it contracts, thereby gripping the device along its entire length. The tube can be fixed to a patient via an adhesive backing, suture or tie, allowing a wide range of potential applications. Dr Spinoza commented "This invention could potentially revolutionise an area which has not moved on from approaches taken in the 1930s. I pursued my idea as far as I could but felt that BTG was well positioned to turn my idea into reality." BTG is evaluating alternative strategies for commercialising the SULL device.
