CONDUCTUS LICENSES HIGH TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTOR PATENTS FROM LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES
04 January 2001 - BTG

BTG announced today that Conductus Inc. has signed a license agreement for yttrium-barium-copper oxide patents and patent applications in Lucent Technologies' portfolio that are fundamental to the high temperature superconductor industry. BTG announced today that Conductus Inc. has signed a license agreement for yttrium-barium-copper oxide patents and patent applications in Lucent Technologies' portfolio that are fundamental to the high temperature superconductor industry. BTG acted as Lucent's commercial advisor and licensing representative in this transaction and will receive a share of the fees and royalties paid to Lucent.

The Lucent HTS patent portfolio, made up of more than 48 issued US patents and related foreign patents and applications, is the result of pioneering research conducted at Bell Laboratories in the mid 1980s and early 1990s. The patents on HTS compounds include YBCO 123, barium-strontium-calcium-copper-oxide 2212 and BSCCO 2223. The portfolio also contains patents on wire manufacturing methods, including the oxide-powder-in-tube technology and end-use applications ranging from communications and power generation to medical imaging and magnetic levitation.

Conductus, Inc. is a fast-growing company developing commercial applications for HTS in the communications industry. Under the terms of the agreement, Conductus has a non-exclusive worldwide licence to the YBCO portion of the portfolio in the fields of communications, healthcare, research instruments and sensors.

"This license, which follows last year's agreement with American Superconductor Corporation, reflects the importance of Lucent's patents in the HTS industry," commented Anthony V. Lando, Senior Vice President and General Manager of BTG, "The early development of the HTS markets, coupled with many uncertain HTS industry patent issues, make licensing in this arena unusually complex. We have been working with Lucent to develop a fair and reasonable licensing program that includes strong commercial incentives for early adopters, and we are pleased with industry response."
