FOOD AND CANCER PREVENTION
14 August 2000 - CSIRO

"A diet which includes cereals, fruits and vegetables is likely to offer the best protection," said Professor Richard Head, Chief of CSIRO Health Sciences and Nutrition.

"A diet which includes cereals, fruits and vegetables is likely to offer the best protection," said Professor Richard Head, Chief of CSIRO Health Sciences and Nutrition.

"Researchers believe that the protective benefits of these foods relate to certain constituents found in plant foods. However, it should be remembered that all food groups including meat, dairy products, fruits, vegetables and cereals contribute essential nutrients for optimal health"

"There has been recent discussion in the media about reducing red meat consumption as part of a cancer prevention strategy. CSIRO's position in regard to red meat consumption is the same as that endorsed by the National Health and Medical Research Council in relation to colorectal cancer. NHMRC made no recommendation to change red meat consumption," said Professor Head.

"Current intakes of red meat in Australia are in line with recommendations set out in the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating sponsored by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care. It should also be remembered that red meat is a good source of protein, iron, zinc and some B vitamins that are important in our diet."

The role of all food groups in our diet is explained in the 12345+ Food and Nutrition Plan a guide to a healthy diet for Australians.

"Balance is the key," said Professor Head.
