NEW SANDVIK TUBE GRADES BENEFIT DEEPER AND MORE REMOTE OFFSHORE EXPLORATION

New duplex stainless steel tube grades, developed by Sandvik Materials Technology, are providing the ultra-high strength and corrosion resistance needed for the wellhead control systems for today's enhanced oil and gas recovery methods.

Anticipating industry demands for more remote and deeper subsea umbilicals - the electrical and hydraulic system 'lifelines' which link remote subsea wellheads to the processing platforms - Sandvik Materials Technology has evolved new super and hyper duplex stainless steel materials.

Designated super duplex Sandvik SAF 2906 and hyper duplex Sandvik 3207 HD, the new grades optimize material strengths and corrosion resistance, extending the properties of Sandvik's industry standard super duplex grade, Sandvik SAF 2507.

Designed for deeper waters, higher temperatures and pressures, the new grades represent the natural evolution of the Sandvik duplex steel grades. They call on years of oil and gas industry experience and Sandvik's vast and advanced metallurgical research and process development capabilities. The company has one of Europe's largest, specialist R&D facilities.

Sandvik's duplex stainless steel grades for umbilicals provide a range of materials whose inherent strength means lower weight through thinner walls and the ability to support its own weight in deep water, whilst maintaining excellent corrosion resistance, even at extreme water temperatures.

Super duplex grade Sandvik SAF 2507, the established workhorse of the oil and gas industry has all round, excellent corrosion properties, high strength - a tensile strength of 800 - 1100 MPa - and can operate at a maximum water temperature of 65°C.

The new Sandvik SAF 2906 has similarly excellent corrosion properties, slightly higher strength - a tensile strength of 860 - 1160 MPa and operates at a maximum of 60°C.

Specially developed with extremely high strength - a tensile strength of 980 - 1180 MPa, Sandvik 3207 HD is ideal for deep water projects and temperatures around 90°C.

Stainless steel umbilical tubing is available from Sandvik in a size range from 11mm up to 89mm outside diameter.
