NEW WORLD TRADE CENTRE TO INCORPORATE FUEL CELL POWER

New York governor George Pataki has announced a new package of energy measures to be incorporated into the designs for the new World Trade Centre development, including fuel cell power generation.

Under the proposals, the planned Freedom Tower and the other World Trade Centre office towers will house fuel cell generators to provide a clean and secure onsite power source.

According to the New York governor's office, the fuel cell generators will produce a total of 4.8 MW of power, making them together one of the largest fuel cell installations in the world.

Commenting on the plans, Governor Pataki said that the use of fuel cell technology in the new buildings would provide a high-profile working example of clean energy production.

"The redevelopment will be a global example of green building design and a constant reminder of our commitment to break the cycle of dependence on foreign energy," he said.

"By moving forward with state-of-the-art design and guidelines, New York will once again show the world our ingenuity, innovation and commitment to building a stronger, brighter future for all."
