A New York State school is to establish its own fuel cell power source on its grounds in an effort to save on energy costs and educate students on new energy technology.

The fuel cell, which is due to be installed in the coming days, will run on a supply of hydrogen derived from natural gas, providing an estimated 50 per cent of the school's day-today energy supply as well as acting as a back up supply in the event of a power cut, according to the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper.

Once installed, the fuel cell is also set to act as an educational tool, with students able to see the internal structure of the power generator through a glass front.

"We're very excited," commented Howard Maffucci, the school's superintendent, talking to the Democrat and Chronicle.

"This type of project is very appropriate for a school district like ours because our entire school is in one building."

The school estimates that as much as $100,000 (£53,336) a year in energy costs could be saved by using the fuel cell, which cost around $2.5 million, partly paid for by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
