Wenco, a leading South American producer of collapsible plastic crates, has turned to Husky Injection Molding Systems for a reliable, cost-effective manufacturing solution for its popular fruit crates. For more than 50 years, Wenco has produced a wide range of plastic products, from housewares to industrial crates. Its best seller has been a line of collapsible thinwall fruit crates that the company exports globally. With competition from rival manufacturers, including makers of wood and cardboard crates, threatening its market share, Wenco decided to upgrade its current injection molding equipment and install more efficient production cells. After researching several machine suppliers, and conducting numerous mold trials to determine cycle times and energy usage, Wenco found that Husky offered the best solution. Wenco purchased three 10,000 kN (1,000 metric ton) Hylectric machines for its plant in Santiago de Chile. The Husky systems produce more than 12 million crates a year, with cycle time savings of 23% over Wenco's existing equipment, and uptime of more than 97%. Wenco has also seen a 30% reduction in energy. "Speed and uptime are important for us," Pedro Chinni, Operations Manager at Wenco, said. "With the Hylectric machines, we're able to produce a quality crate with minimal risk, and do it at a lower cost than our competitors. Husky not only delivered what they promised, they delivered machines that exceeded our expectations."
