SANDVIK MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY ENTERS RIBBON MARKET FOR BRAIDED CATHETERS
Incorporating the new production processes, Sandvik Materials Technology is now adding significant capacity at its Kanthal Palm Coast facility, to the catheter braiding wire market with a high quality product in terms of cleanliness, spooling and product consistency. As a custom manufacturing house there is full control of product quality, made possible by totally integrated production from steel melt to the finished wire product. Key potential benefits of braiding catheters include control and maximisation of torque, kink and pressure resistance, stiffness and pushability. The facility has a history of supplying very fine diameter, speciality wire - dimensions down to a quarter the size of human hair are common - and gears its production, through close liaison with customers, to supplying wire which demands high quality or unique characteristics. Extensive R & D resources exist within the company and the Sandvik Group as a whole, dedicated to the development of materials and production processes. Wire is available typically in dimensions 0.001' thick x 0.003' wide in stainless steel grade Sandvik Bioline Type 304V, in the tempered condition. Thicknesses down to 0.00075' can be produced. Sandvik Materials Technology is dedicated to continuous improvement in delivering superior quality products and services to its medical customers. A key goal of the organisation is to bring into focus the entire Sandvik Bioline product range offered to the medical device industry. Products include wire, strip, tube, profile shapes and cannulated bar for the manufacture of catheter guidewire systems, orthopaedic and dental implants, fracture fixation devices, suture needles and staples, surgical blades and saw cutting tools, dental burrs and reamers, and wire for diagnostic and sensor electrical leads.
