A BRAND NEW HAEGER PROGRAMMABLE ROBOT INSERTION CELL
08 November 2006 - Metalforming Machinery Makers' Association

A brand new Haeger programmable robot insertion cell is a feature of Shear-Form Machine Tools Ltd, the Coventry based sheet metal and plate working machinery supplier’s. This robot insertion cell will demonstrate its flexibility and ease of handling, using Haeger’s new 824 WindowTouch–3 insertion press with a 6kg Motorman HP6 six axis industrial robot complete with NX100 controller with a touch screen pendant, plus Haeger’s Insertion Logic software to insert self clinch nuts into components made by a Dimeco ‘Flexipunch’ line also on the stand.

Haeger’s 824 WindowTouch–3 will also demonstrate it capabilities as a stand alone machine. It has a fast ram speed for high productivity and can make insertions using thin gauge materials and other sophisticated insertion applications, where absolute repeatability (+/-0.5%) is critical. It has a force range from 4-72kN, a throat depth of 610mm and throat height of 342mm.

The cell is loaded, unloaded and operated by one person. Each component part is picked up by the Motorman robot using adjustable grippers aligned to meet individual sizes of part, which is then placed onto a reference fixture, once correctly aligned the robot, which has a +/- 0.07mm repetitive accuracy, picks up the part and then automatically positions for the installation of the inserts. When the operation is complete the finished parts can be stacked/stored ready for onward production. The insertion press has a purpose designed multi-shuttle tooling platform for nuts, studs and stand-offs, with a tool changing time of about 2 minutes. When feeding the machine manually a laser part locating light is available to assist the speed of the insertion process using a red cross hair laser to show the operator exactly where each fastener is to be inserted.

The latest Turret Insertion System not only enables up to 4 different fasteners to be inserted in one part handling, but has a positive locking station which ensures the operator has activated the correct tool station and that the tool does not move when the insertion takes place. The tool position feedback helps eliminate missing fasteners by stopping the operator from moving on to the next fastener until the current fastener is inserted. A digital camera supplied as part of the Quality Control Package is being demonstrated, enabling the operator to take images of the positions of fasteners on the component he/she is working on and to store the images in a part program for future reference. Haeger’s latest Insertion Logic Software and a Quality Control Package, which includes Networking Software Communications and Offline programming are being used. The networking feature provides simple communications between the press and a PC or network, allowing the operator to create and store programs off line and call them up on multiple machines. A similar robot cell but using a 50kg Motorman robot is currently in operation at Texol Technical Solutions plc in Dundee, Scotland.

This cell has almost eliminated the handling and labour content of what was a very manual operation requiring two operators to handle parts due to their bulk. The largest panel being used is 1850mm x 750mm x 1,5mm thick and weighs in at 21kg, whilst the smallest is 300mm x 300mm x 2,5mm thick. The material being handled is 1.5mm galvanized steel, 1,5mm CRS CR4 (mild steel) and 2,5mm Zintec. For the largest panel the company’s cycle time has been reduced from 6 minutes with two operators (12 minutes labour) to around 4.5 minutes.
