P2 MULTI-FACETED CELL COATS
13 November 2006 - Q-Sense AB
| The pericellular coat that certain cell types have as part of their structure is the interest of Ralf Richter at the Department of Biophysical Chemistry at Heidelberg University. |
QCM-D is a key tool for this research because conventional imaging techniques cannot provide sufficient information about this part of a cell’s structure. P4 At the receiving end Creating biomaterials that can mimic receptor functions have potentially wide application in areas ranging from new biological sensors, to tissue engineering substrates and drug delivery systems. Paul Van Tassel and Jennifer Phelps at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Yale University explain the challenges. P6 Publications Reviews There is a bumper crop of publications to review. In this issue we focus on those that are mainly geared towards biological research. They are: 1. Gravimetric Antigen Detection Utilizing Antibody-Modified Lipid Bilayers. 2. Viscoelastic Modelling of Template-Directed DNA Synthesis. 3. The Effect of Charged Groups on Protein Interactions with Poly(HEMA) Hydrogels. 4. Enzyme Immobilization on Poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) Films Studied by Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring. 5. Rapid Three-dimensional Biointerfaces for Real-time Immunoassay using hIL- 18BPa as a Model Antigen. 6. A Dual-Frequency QCM-D Setup Operating at Elevated Oscillation Amplitudes P8 Product and Company News Electrochemical cell, US Expansion, Job Opportunities, Upcoming Events Q-Sense ended 2005 with a great deal of optimism with a major new product and an increase in turnover. In 2006 we have continued to grow and consolidate our position as a leader in QCM-D technology. The E4 model we launched last year has exceeded our expectations in terms of sales and turnover is set to surpass last year’s impressive growth figures. As well as sustained interest within academic research, the E4 has started to be accepted in commercial applications and a number of large companies have placed orders of which Procter & Gamble was the first. For any company, building new product lines is always a major challenge. The continued improvement in sales and orders is a confirmation that we have correctly judged market needs. Over the coming months, the focus will continue on building marketing opportunities. In particular, we are making a major commitment to the North American market. This will involve significant investment in building our sales organization to offer a first class service to our customers in this region. This will be achieved by expanding our sales team and we are actively looking for new people who are seeking a career with Q-Sense. See our news pages for more information.

About: Q-Sense AB
Q-Sense is the leading specialist in QCM-D technology, and was the first company set up specifically to develop the technique. It was founded in 1996 by researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden and the company continues to work closely with researchers at leading universities throughout the world to ensure that QCM-D is at the forefront of developments. Early year 2000, the company entered a more commercial phase and has since then, successfully sold research instruments to academic and industrial scientists worldwide. Today, the company has a world-wide distributor network, instruments used in more than 20 countries and a subsidiary in the US. It is part of Biolin AB, a group which supports the development of innovation in science. The QCM-D technique determines the mass of very thin surface bound layers and simultaneously gives information about their viscoelastic properties. This offers new opportunities to study conformational changes in layers formed on different surface materials, for example biomaterials. The unique properties of QCM-D make it an invaluable tool for studying macromolecules at surfaces and an important complement to existing technologies. Applications include biofouling, biomaterials, drug development and surfactants. |
