NEW INNOVATION-ORIENTED RESEARCH PROGRAMME PHOTONIC DEVICES APPROVED BY ECONOMIC AFFAIRS

The Innovation-Oriented Research Programme ‘Photonic Devices’, an initiative of Professor Joseph Braat of the Imaging Science & Technology Department of the Applied Sciences Faculty, has been approved by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. It is the second programme to be granted funds by the ministry this year. Previously the ‘Self Healing Materials’ IOP of Professor Sybrand van der Zwaag of the Aerospace Engineering Faculty, also based in Delft, received ministerial support.

Innovation-Oriented Research Programme Innovation-Oriented Research Programmes come under a subsidy scheme of the Ministry of Economic Affairs that is aimed at making the research world more accessible to business & industry and at intensifying contacts between the worlds of business and research. Projects of universities and other non-profit research institutions with specific relevance to the long-term research requirements of business & industry are eligible for this scheme.

Photonic Devices
To create the ‘Photonic Devices’ IOP Joseph Braat, together with the co-applicants of the 3 TUs, teamed up the Lasercentrum (‘Laser Centre) and AMOLF, both important players in industry and science. Looking for areas where the Netherlands could secure a top position in Photonics, the decision was made to focus on ‘ Photonic Devices’ and within that on the development of advanced light sources and detection systems with e.g. applications in the form of miniaturised systems with highly sensitive detectors and applications of high sensitive ‘photonic devices’ in health & medicine for diagnostics and therapy.

The ministerial subsidy plus the contributions from the participating institutions means that the IOP can count on an amount of € 22m for the first 4 years with, in principle, a similar amount of subsidy forthcoming for a second period.
