QUICK DELIVERY SECURES MAJOR HEAT EXCHANGER ORDER FOR SANDVIK
04 April 2003 - Sandvik Materials Technology UK

A major order for small diameter, seamless stainless steel heat exchanger tubes has been won by Sandvik Materials Technology in UK.

Valued at £¾ million, the order was placed by fabricator Wellman Graham, part of the Wellman Group, and covered tubes for 12 large heat exchangers for a sulphur expansion recovery project in an Eastern European refinery. The project was undertaken to upgrade existing carbon steel units with stainless steel and needed to be completed on a very tight delivery schedule, requiring the first set of tubes to be delivered for fabrication within five weeks of order placement.

Sandvik was able to meet the first delivery and the ongoing requirements and, in fact, improved on the final scheduled delivery by three weeks. This enabled Wellman Graham to fabricate and deliver to site within the required timescale - a key factor in securing the order.

The heat exchangers have been manufactured on the Wellman Thermal Products site at Oldbury in the West Midlands.

Sandvik supplied the 12 U-bend sets of 20mm and 19.05mm outside diameter tubes in Type 316L stainless steel from Sandvik Chomutov Precision Tubes Ltd, its manufacturing plant in the Czech Republic. Sandvik Chomutov U-bends are produced in-house from cold pilgered straight tubes in sizes from 12mm to 38mm outside diameter and precision bent within radii of 1.5 x OD up to 1500mm.

Says Malcolm Clarke, Wellman Graham's director and general manager, 'This was an extremely important order for us and, since it was won against international competition on a quick delivery, it was vital that we met the delivery requirements for all units. All tubes arrived reliably from Sandvik on time, and on occasions before time enabling us to maintain our very tight production schedules. Despite the quick delivery, Sandvik delivered tubes of the highest quality. Overall and most importantly, we were able to meet all of the required delivery times on site'.

Wellman Graham Ltd is owned by Wellman, an international engineering group whose activities include pressure vessels, industrial and commercial boilers and heat treatment furnaces.
